Why Crochet Christmas Kids/ Toddler Sweater?
I wanted to design an easy beginners jumper that had some wow factor, but was still easy and could be worn for more than one occassion!
The main body is plain, I did this so it could be worn with most outfits under a coat, and not seen as just a Christmas Sweater.
If you are putting all the effort into crocheting a garment/ sweater (Jumper), it’s nice to be able to wear it more than once through the season.
If you’ve never crocheted a sweater (jumper) or garment before this is the perfect starting project, as it’s for a child, so it’s small and quick, and very easy!
Some of my other Crochet Garment Designs include:
- Easy Chunky yarn Cardigan for adults
- Bobble Stitch Cardigan for adults
- Easy kids Top Down sweater (raglan)

What do you need to know to crochet the Christmas Kids Sweater?
This is a really easy pattern that is perfect for toddlers and kids. It’s made from 2 squares, for the front and the back, then sleeves which are made from triangles.
The only stitches you need to know are:
- Foundation Double Crochet
- Front Post Double Crochet and Back Post Double Crochet
- 2DCtogether
- Double Crochet

What Yarn Can You Use For a Christmas Kids Sweater
The yarn for this crochet pattern was actually the key, the colours and the thickness makes this a quick project!
The yarn was kindly gifted by Wecrochet as part of the 12 days of Christmas blog hop with Fosbas Crochet.
I chose Brava Worsted Weight as the colours were so festive, and Wine colour was absolutely perfect.
This yarn is super soft, and very easy on the bank balance at only $2.99 a ball, and as I’ve said before it works up so so quickly!
Check out my other patterns with this great yarn
If you are reading this in the UK, this yarn is well worth investing in, as it’s like a DK, but thicker, and so it’s quicker to make anything= win win
I made this sweater in Wine, Cream, and Peapod.
How much yarn do you need to crochet a Christmas kids sweater?
I made the size 3-4 years for my friends daughter, and it took 2 balls, for the front and back, then oddments of the cream and Peapod.
For the bigger sizes you’ll need 3 balls of wine.
When I say oddments for the sleeves, it’s less than half a ball, 100m of each colour for the sleeves.
How long does it take to crochet a kids sweater?
This sweater is really quick to make as it uses worsted weight yarn and a 5.5mm hook. I’d expect this to be made over a few hours, but definitely over a weekend!

Beginning Ch3 counts as a st throughout.
To keep track of the sleeve decreases add a stitch marker to the side you decrease to remind you to reduce.
If you leave longer tails on your crochet you can use these to sew up the side seams and shoulder.
To change colour, make the last yrh on the stitch in the new colour.
You can carry the yarn along the side seam of the sleeves, just ensure the yarn is not too tight when doing the first yarn over.
