Here you can get some free crochet Poppy patterns – a few designs that make the poppies all slightly different.
A crochet is a great addition to an outfit, and not only due to the British Legion, but also as they are great colourful flowers, and everlasting if crochet!
It’s over 100 years since the end of the 1st world war, and in the UK we remember this with the Poppy Appeal run by the British Legion, where we all wear poppies from the end of October, to 11th November – Remembrance Sunday.
I’ve crocheted poppies over the years, and sold them with all monies raised donated to the British Legion for this great cause.
For a really “Frilly poppy” a great pattern would be my Crochet Peony pattern, but change the colours

I get asked a lot of questions about crochet poppies, so I’ll try and answer them here.
How long does it take to crochet a poppy?
These poppy patterns are really quick. They should take an experienced crocheter between 30 and 45 minutes to make one, maybe even quicker.
If you are a complete beginner, I’d expect them to take between 1-2 hours.
If you are completely new to crochet, I can not stress, that learning a granny square is a great way to start, and I have a complete beginners tutorial.

What do you need to know to crochet a poppy?
My patterns are very simple, I’d call them advanced beginners, as they use only a small number of stitches. You’ll need to know how to:
- Make a magic ring
- Single crochet
- Half Double Crochet
- Double crochet
- Work in the top 2 loops of the stitch
- How to make a Slip Stitch.
Are these Crochet Poppy Patterns in UK and USA Terms?
I’ve written the patterns out twice, the first ones you come to will be USA terms.

What do you need to crochet a poppy?
These crochet poppies are a great way to use up stash yarn.
I’ve made these using Double Knitting (worsted 3) yarn, but they could easily be made with any yarn, just use the correct hook to yarn size.
I’ve used 3 colours of yarn, green, black and red.
A crochet hook (of the right size)
A stitch marker can come in handy
Scissors and a tapestry needle.
How big is crochet poppy?
This crochet poppy pattern makes poppies that are 6cm (just over 2 inches) in width when using DK yarn and a 4mm hook.
