Here you can find the free pattern for a crochet travel bag. This is large duffle bag, holdall or even a weekender is perfect for travel, maybe a weekend or overnight trip away and was inspired by Mary Poppins!
Remember that huge carpet bag that was never-ending and had everything from umbrellas to standard lamps?
There aren’t that many bespoke large crochet bags that could be used for travel, so I thought – hey – let’s design one!
So I did. I loved it, and Simply Crochet Magazine did too and it was published in issue number 82

How do you make a crochet duffle bag?
This crochet weekender bag is really easy to make. It uses one of my favourite patterns, the Starburst Granny Square.
>>>Watch the Video for how to make the starburst square
These are made in 2 different colours combinations and then crocheted together.
This design was made before I learned how to “Continuous join as you go” if I’d known this then, I’d definitely of joined this way”
Learn how to continuous join Starburst Granny squares here.

Why the starburst granny square?
I adore this square, as it gives a bit more “fun” to a crochet project, and they are very repetitive when you start crocheting.
These are an advanced beginners project, but they are really good at increasing your stitch knowledge.

Other projects that use the starburst granny square:
Starburst Granny Square Blanket
Starburst Granny Square Cushion
And if you like the design but what hexagons:

What do you need to know to crochet this bag?
In my easy crochet pattern, you only need to know (USA Terms):
- How to make a magic ring
- Half double crochet
- Slip stitch
- Chain Stitch
- 2DC Cluster (2DCcl)
- 3DC Cluster (3DCcl)
- Double crochet
- Treble crochet

Yarn choice for a large crochet bag
The lazy crocheter struck again for this one. I knew this bag was going to take quite a few squares to make, so I thought “go thick yarn and a big hook”.
I decided on a really affordable chunky yarn, Stylecraft Special Chunk in Khaki , Raspberry, Burgundy and Gold.
The colours in the bag are perfect for not showing the dirt, and show off the accent colours of the flowers brilliantly.
>>>Shop Stylecraft Chunky Yarn here
Another alternative is Cygnet Chunky
Another option for a hard wearing yarn would be something Cotton based, like Dishie from Wecrochet.
This is a worsted weight yarn, so would give a slightly smaller square but you’d get a very hard wearing bag that wouldn’t be prone to felting, however it would cost slightly more.
