Here you can find the free crochet pattern for an easy kids crochet poncho.
I love a poncho, as a perfect autumn/ fall accessory. When you need another layer, but don’t need a coat.
Made using Double crochets (UK Treble) and bobble stitches to give a bit of texture, and throw into the mix a self colour changing yarn – and hey presto – a super easy kids crochet poncho pattern.
This pattern is really easy, it’s made from just 2 crochet rectangles, that are joined at the shoulders and a collar added.
The reason this design looks so striking is the yarn! If you’d like to save this for later please pin it below.

Yarn choice for a crochet poncho.
This was the key for this design. Cygnet Boho Spirit in Harmony
I’d accidentally bought some colour changing yarn, when I visited a local yarn lady. This yarn was the key to this project, in fact it’s been key to a few projects
>>> 1 ball rainbow granny square blanket
This is a 100% premium acrylic, with over 240m / 100g ball. It uses a 4.5mm hook too, meaning it’s quick to work with!

Why colour changing yarn?
Well, it works out so much cheaper! To get all the different colours, you only need to buy one ball of yarn, rather than multiple colours to get the same effect.
The grey yarn
For the main colour of the poncho I chose a grey. I wanted a colour to show off the rainbow effect of the yarn.
I used a chunky weight yarn, witn a little bit of added sparkle.
But you could use Stylecraft Chunky in Silver to get the same effect.
How do you crochet a poncho for kids
This is a tunic style poncho, and it really is a lot simpler than it looks.
It’s just 2 rectangles, joined on the shoulders with a hole left for the neck.
Then for the chunky collar, I’ve used Front Post Double crochets and Back Post Double crochets to give stunning texture.
