Here you can find the free pattern for some crochet water balloons using worsted weight yarn written in both USA and UK terms.
These are a great alternative for the rubber balloons version as they can be reused making them eco-friendly.
No plastic/ latex bits to pick up after the water fight has finished and no “adult” spending hours filling and tying them up ready for the kids to throw them in about 2 seconds flat (Yep – I’ve been there!).
These were inspired by the Hobbii yarn “#HobbiicationJunior” campaign. This wanted inspiration for travelling with kids….. And these water balloons are perfect. They amuse the kids, they are small and light, and they are reusable!
What yarn for crochet water balloons?
I’ve chosen a standard worsted weight yarn for this crochet pattern, because this is what most people will have in their stash!
You can use Bernet Blanket, or a chenille yarn like Jellybaby, but this makes them a lot more expensive and a lot heavier.
(Heavier = hurts more when they hit you!)
I’ve used Hobbii Amino XL, which is 100% acrylic, and comes in 50g balls, of 100m/ 109 yards.
How much yarn does it take to make a water balloon?
Using a worsted weight yarn, these only take about 14 metres, or 16 yards (7 grams if you work in weight).
That means from one 100g ball of yarn, you could crochet 14 water balloons!
How long does it take to crochet a water balloon?
These are really quick to make, if you are an experienced crocheter, you should be able to make one in about 10 minutes.
If you are a beginner, expect them to take a little longer, but the more you make the quicker you’ll get!
How big is the crochet water balloon?
These water balloons are 3 and half x 3 inches in size, or 9 x 7 cm if you prefer.

Reusable water balloons
The great thing about these water balloons is that they are reusable! Just pop them in water again, and they will soak up more water ready to be thrown again……. No more spending hours tying them for the one use!
How do you fill a crochet water balloon?
You don’t really is the simple answer. You soak them in the water, then just throw them. To reuse them, just soak them again!
How do you wash a water balloon or bomb?
If they do need a wash, as they are made with a standard worsted weight yarn, just pop them in the washing machine with some detergent on a 40 degree wash, then hang on the washing line to dry.
You don’t need to wash after every use, most times they can just be hung on the line to dry (or you can tumble dry them!).
What do you need to know to crochet a water balloon?
These water balloons are really easy to make. I class them as an advanced beginners project.
You’ll need to know how to:
- Make a Magic Ring
- Chain
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) (UK Half Treble crochet)
- Slip Stitch
- 2HDC together
- Fasten off, weave in ends
