FPDC and BPDC are both a type of double crochet (DC), but you work your stitch around the post of the DC.
FPDC, you work the stitch around the front “Front Post Double Crochet”, and BPDC, you work the stitch with the post at the back “Back Post Double Crochet”
These are also the same stitches in UK terms as the RtrF and RtfB (Raised Treble Front and Back).

How to do the FPDC/ RtrF in Crochet?
It’s really easy!
For a normal double crochet, you’d work the stitch of the next row in the top “V”of the stitch.
For FPDC, you work the stitch inserting your hook from the right, going behind the post of the stitch, and out the other side.

The DC will then be pushed forwards.
Grab your yarn
Pull back through
Complete the DC as normal

If you look at the picture above all the stitches as “raised” in front of the original row of Double Crochets behind.

How to you do the FPDC, BPDC?
Simply alternate the FPDC, BPDC stitches.
So starting with an FPDC you FPDC, BPDC, FPDC, BPDC across until the end.

Why do FPDC BPDC in crochet?
If you alternate the stitches of FPDC and BPDC it gives a great Rib effect, which produces a stretchy crochet.
What can you use FPDC BPDC for?
I always use this for my Ribbing on Sweaters, hats in fact everything.
It gives a little bit of texture, that’s stretchy, and easy to do!
