Here you can find the free pattern for a crochet bike basket! Of course I was thinking I should have crochet basket for my bike, I have everything else crochet, so why not one of these!
This was great fun to make. and something I’d wanted to do for a long time – I just needed the yarn! I thought it was going to take loads of yarn, but in actual fact it took only one bobbin of the huge Infinity Hearts T-shirt yarn from Rito Hobby, with some left over for a Plant Pot Cozy too!
I’d seen this bike basket on Pinterest before, but knew the way my bike worked (it’s got front suspension), it would hang too far down, and rub against the front wheel – pretty much like my wicker basket does now (sometimes I sound like a train whizzing along where the basket hits the wheel). So I needed a different way of fastening the basket to my bike for a start, and a different size to stop the dreaded train noise!

Yarn for a Crochet Bicycle Basket
This was absolutely key for this pattern to work. I needed a really thick yarn, that would hold its shape. RitoHobby, very kindly sent me some yarn for free.
I chose some really thick T-shirt yarn, and the tip here to help the basket keep it’s shape is to use a smaller hook that you would think.
In my case, I used an 8mm hook, when really looking at the yarn, a 12-15mm would seem about right, but I needed stitches that were tight.

Crochet Bike Basket Pattern
The basket is made by working in the amigurumi method. Work in a continuous spiral, without closing off each round with a slip stitch. You may find it helpful to place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and move it up as you work. The basket is made as 2 parts (the basket and handle 1 as one piece, then handle 2 which is attached as you crochet. No sewing needed apart from the buttons.
