I’ve had a few days off making new designs – just had a play with the basic hats as something to do to keep my itchy fingers busy.
But then I thought of making something a little different – why a fried egg of course.

This one starts with the basic hat pattern.
Pattern
The hats are all made using a 3.5mm hook (If you don?t have one, a 3.25mm or a 4mm are absolutely fine too.
Oddments of double knit yarn.
Abbreviations
Ch ? Chain
HDC ? Half Double crochet
HDC2tog ? Half double crochet 2 together.
SS ? Slip Stitch
Instructions
Round 1:Using yellow yarn, Make a magic loop, ch 2 (Counts as a stitch throughout), 5HDC in the ring.
Round 2: Chain 2, 1 HDC in the base of the ch2, 2 HDC in each st around. SS to join.[12 sts]
Round 3: Ch2, 1HDC in the base of the ch2, 1 HDC, *2HDC in the next st, 1 HDC * *-* repeat around SS to top of ch2 to join. [18sts]
Round 4: Ch2, working in the back loops only for this round 1HDC in the base of the ch2, 1 HDC in each of the next 2 stitches. *2HDC in the next st, 1 HDC in each of the next 2 sts.* *-* repeat around, SS to top of ch2 to join. [24 sts]
Round 5-6: Ch2, 1HDC in each st around. SS to top of ch2 to join.[24sts]
Round 7: Ch2, 1HDC, 2HDC tog, *1 HDC in each of the next 2 stitches, 2HDCtog* [18sts]
Fasten off weave in ends. Turn inside out.

Hopefully you can see we now have available loops to crochet into.
Round 1: Join white yarn on row 4 – now working in the free loops created from round 4. Ch3, 1 DC in each stitch.
Round 2: Ch3, 1 DC in the base of the chain. 2DC in each stitch around.
Round 3: Ch3, 1 DC in the base of the chain. 2 DC in the each of the next 6 stitches. 1 DC in the each of the next 2, HDC in the next, sc in the next, ss to join.
(If I was making again – to get a smoother edge, I’d start round 3 with a chain 1, HDC, DC, then 2 DC in the next 6, 1 DC in each of the next 2, HDC, SC, and SS)
Fasten off, weave in ends.

Ta-Dah – one fried egg hat (Unfortunately not modelled on a bottle as the blue one drank all the smoothies)!
